What is notes? What it means?

In perfumery, notes are the individual scent impressions that make up a fragrance.

They describe what you smell and when you smell it after applying a fragrance.

Think of a fragrance like music:

  • Individual sounds = notes
  • Together, they create a composition
The three types of fragrance notes
Top Notes (Opening notes)

What you smell first

  • Appear immediately after application
  • Light, fresh, and fleeting
  • Last about 5–15 minutes

Common examples:

  • Citrus (bergamot, lemon)
  • Light florals
  • Herbs

Purpose: create the first impression

Heart Notes (Middle notes)
The true character of the fragrance
  • Emerge after top notes fade
  • Last 2–4 hours
  • Form the core personality

Common examples:

  • Rose, jasmine
  • Lavender
  • Spices

Purpose: define the soul of the scent

Base Notes (Dry-down notes)
What lingers
  • Appear last and last the longest
  • Deep, rich, grounding
  • Can remain 6+ hours

Common examples:

  • Sandalwood
  • Amber
  • Musk
  • Vanilla

Purpose: provide depth, warmth, and longevity

Why notes matter

  • Choose scents that match your mood or personality
  • Compare fragrances beyond brand names
Simple example

A fragrance described as:

Top: Bergamot
Heart: Rose, Jasmine
Base: Sandalwood, Musk

Means:

  • You smell citrus first
  • Then a floral bouquet
  • Finally, a warm woody finish
